The city is old, and everything, including the power lines, needs repair. The electric lights come on every morning at six, and go out every night at nine.

I give it 4 stars and am looking forward to the rest of the series. In the City of Ember in year 241, the sky is always dark. I also enjoyed seeing what it might be like for people who'd never known anything but the underground to see things like (view spoiler) While this isn't the deepest middle grade book I've ever read, nor is it my favorite one ever, I feel it was appropriate for its target audience while also being enjoyable for an adult like me who hasn't been a tween for a while. It was simply a difference in personality and outlook. While Doon had a little friction with his father I appreciated that his father wasn't portrayed as stupid or wrong. Lina was so patient and loving with her baby sister and strange grandmother. For one thing, I liked that they *had* family to interact with and they clearly loved their families and wanted to help make things better for them as much as for everyone else. Bonus points that it's an almost-teen girl and boy working together without any romance whatsoever! Woot woot! I thought the interactions between Lina and Doon and their friends and family were done well. I enjoyed the puzzle aspect (that's part of what I enjoyed about the movie, too) and I love how the main characters work together to solve the problem that almost everyone else has become too complacent to bother with.
The city of ember series series#
This first book in the series was very fun. My mom read the books first and enjoyed them, but we talk about our books so I ended up needing to wait a few years until I'd forgotten what mom said about the sequels so I could read them myself.
The city of ember series movie#
I first heard of this story back in 2008 when the movie came out, but it took until the second time my mom and I watched it (and some disappointment when we realized they weren't making a sequel) to check and see if it was based on a book. It was just about impossible with an audiobook though so I didn’t even try. While Lina and Doon try to decipher the instructions to escape Ember I really wished I had a physical book so I could try to figure out the message along with them. But then again if it were all straight forward there wouldn't be the fun of solving the mystery. And the builders really set these folks up for failure with all the stuff that had to be figured out. I am willing to overlook a lot of the little flaws in the book but it seems to me that Ember wasn't exactly perfectly placed to survive this huge disaster, whatever it was (it’s just down a hole). Maybe this will be addressed in the sequel. I am not sure I fully understand why the founders of Ember felt so much ignorance was necessary or how they could have missed the consequences that that could have over time. I was interested in how the people dealt with their dwindling supplies and Lina's reaction to a colored pencil was great. I thought it was well done and believable. It never occurs to them that the world isn't fair and that not everyone would react as they would. They are kids, despite being working members of society and this is clearly shown in the naivety they display at various points. I liked one thing about Lina and Doon though. There are a lot of coincidences and things that cause one to need to suspend disbelief To me, the concept was interesting enough to make me want to read the book and overlook implausibility or flaws. Not that our hero and heroine aren't kids, being 12, but in that society they are really functioning as adults, so let's lay off the whiny little boy voice. I like her cheery sounding Lina, but Doon sounds too silly and kid like. It doesn't say he is wheezing and gasping like he is on his last breath, but every time he says anything it sounds like the narrator is on her death bed. The book flat out tells you he is big and fat. (I suppose I must declare the book “Fascinating!”) I must mention here that the narration was inferior and the assignment day scene is a perfect example of why. This Assignment Day ritual fascinates me too. The kids go to school until they are twelve and then pick out of a hat the job they will be doing. canned food – the storerooms fascinate me).

They get the power from a source they don't really understand and rely on the dwindling contents of storerooms full of items they cannot truly understand (i.e. I am fascinated by the controlled environment in which the people of Ember have lived.

Ember is a city that was built to ensure that humans survived some disaster and the city is powered by electricity from a mysterious generator.
